The four things that matter
For home use, a jam label needs very little — but these few lines earn their keep six months later:
- The name of the preserve: "Mirabelle plum jam", not just "Jam".
- The date it was made. The "Made on…" layer in Stick-it inserts it in one tap.
- A rough keeping time, or a best-before date if you prefer.
- A useful detail: "low sugar", "with vanilla", "sterilised jars".
The date: always write it
It is the line you think is pointless while writing it, and the only one you ever actually look for. A properly sterilised jam keeps for a year in the cupboard and about three weeks in the fridge once opened; without a date, neither figure is any use.
Stick-it offers two date layers: "Made on…" for the production date, and "Best before…" for a keeping date. The prefix and the date are a single element, so the alignment stays clean however long the text is.
Which size for which jar
The useful measure is the circumference of the jar, not its height. A label should cover roughly a third of the way round to stay readable head-on without curling back on itself.
- Standard 324 g jam jar: Medium (63 × 33 mm).
- One-litre preserving jar: Large (96 × 50 mm).
- Small 125 g jar, verrine, tasting pot: Small (47 × 25 mm).
Gluing so it holds — or so it comes off
Two strategies, depending on whether the jar will be reused. Diluted white glue, brushed onto plain paper, holds perfectly and peels off in hot water when the jar goes round again. That is the method for jars you refill every year.
Sticker paper survives the fridge and condensation, but leaves a stubborn residue. Keep it for jars you give away.
Either way, glue onto a cold, dry jar: on still-warm glass, condensation forms under the label and makes it bubble.
